Mayor Burkett thanks the community and staff in response to the ice storm

I want to express my sincere gratitude for the extraordinary resilience shown by our community, staff, and volunteers. Your relentless efforts during the recent ice storm to protect the well-being of Severn's residents have been truly remarkable, and I am deeply appreciative of all that you have achieved and continue to do. The ice storm posed significant challenges for everyone, which led to Severn’s declaration of a Significant Weather Event. This decision provided the Township and our community with the necessary time to evaluate the situation, coordinate with external agencies, and address the issues at hand. The Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Response, MPP Jill Dunlop, confirmed it is not necessary to declare a State of Emergency as the Township would not gain access to additional resources or expedite power restoration through this action. The Provincial resources are first going to the priority needs of larger population centers. Provincial staff are on-site at the Township of Severn and will help with the management of resources when they become available. Instead, our focus has been on coordinating the use of local resources with neighbouring municipalities, including the City of Orillia and the County of Simcoe.

We have received numerous calls and messages inquiring about issues related to fallen branches, trees obstructing roads, and downed power lines. However, it is often during times of crisis that a team's true strength is revealed. The dedication of our Public Works Team in clearing roads and sidewalks of debris around the clock has enabled Hydro One crews to restore power to many affected customers. Meanwhile, our Water and Wastewater Operators have been vigilantly monitoring our drinking water supply 24/7 to ensure public health is protected. Fire and Emergency Services have remained on standby, responding to fires and other emergencies with professionalism and care. Additionally, our Recreation and Customer Care staff have shown exceptional responsiveness, empathy, and solidarity in assisting those who have sought refuge at the Warming Centre in Washago, as well as those visiting the Administration Office or Coldwater Community Centre for warmth and comfort. Although we are a small team serving a vast area, the efficiency and coordination displayed by all departments, along with the community's response to this crisis, deserve recognition—you should take pride in this.

The readiness of our staff to exceed expectations reflects their character and commitment to serving the community. The resilience and strength of our residents are equally commendable. From what I have observed, neighbours were looking out for one another, and everyone made an effort to be kind, patient, and understanding. This experience will provide us all with valuable lessons. I encourage residents to reflect on their response to the crisis and assess their emergency plans and preparedness. The Township will use the insights gained from the ice storm to refine and strengthen our emergency operations and response strategies for potential future incidents.

With sincere appreciation,
Mayor Mike Burkett
