Purchase your 2024 fire permit
Open-air burning and permits
Township of Severn’s Open-Air Burning By-law regulates the issuing of fire permits, the size of fires and materials you can burn within an open-air fire. Fire permits are required for all outdoor burning in Severn. Fire permits are valid until December 31 of the year the permit is issued. Fire permits purchased in 2023 are now expired.
We issue two types of fire permits:
- fire permit for all fires 61 cm in diameter or less for a fee of $25
- agricultural fire permit for larger burns for a fee of $75 (our staff will need to visit the site to approve the permit)
Once you complete your online annual fire permit application or online agricultural fire permit application you will be contacted by our staff either approving your fire permit or requesting further information.
Once approved, you can only burn clean dry wood with either permit. Please do not burn leaves or garden waste in an open-air fire. Instead, you can dispose of yard waste through County of Simcoe's yard waste and leaf pick up program, or at a one of their waste facilities.
If the guidelines of your fire permit are not followed as per our Open-Air Burning By-law, your fire permit may be revoked without a refund and the property owner may be invoiced for staff and department services.
"Fire permits help ensure that fire is used safely. A permit sets out the rules around what can be burned and how the fire should be maintained and extinguished. It also lets our staff and firefighters know that there will be a fire in the area. This allows us to be on alert for any problems and to reassure neighbours or other members of the community who may call concerning smoke."
