Severn proclaims April as Earth month

Proclamation to designate April 2023 as Earth Month

WHEREAS, Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, to inspire an appreciation of the natural world through conservation and protection; and

WHEREAS, the annual recognition of this day is an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to the principles of that first Earth Day; and

WHEREAS, Earth Day marks a renewed commitment to environmental stewardship and to the implementation of efforts to improve, protect and enhance the environment; and

WHEREAS global challenges continue to grow, such as environmental degradation, climate change, food, and water shortages; and

WHEREAS, preservation and protection of the environment can be taken at the individual level through education, public policy, and media campaigns; and

WHEREAS, the Township of Severn celebrates Earth Day by extending it to the month of April in recognition of our commitment to environmental stewardship; and,

WHEREAS, residents of the Township of Severn are encouraged to implement practices designed to preserve and protect our environment and shape the future of our environmental security; and

WHEREAS, the Township of Severn will help promote the stewardship of our local and global environment by sharing the #SevernfortheEarth social media campaign during the month of April to increase awareness of environmental action that can be taken by our community; and

WHEREAS, hundreds of thousands of Canadians show their concern for the environment and their communities each year in April by participating in Pitch-In Canada projects to reduce, reuse, recycle and properly dispose of waste; and

WHEREAS, Pitch-In Canada encourages voluntary action to keep communities clean and beautiful and restore and maintain a healthy environment; and

WHEREAS, the Township of Severn will support the community in the participation of Pitch-in Week occurring April 17 to 23, 2023, to improve, protect and enhance our local environment.

THEREFORE, I, Mike Burkett, Mayor of the Township of Severn, do hereby proclaim the month of April 2023 as Earth Month.

We invite the community to learn more and participate this year in:
