It is with sadness the Township of Severn has learned of the passing of former Mayor and Councillor Ron Stevens.
Mr. Stevens started his 43-year municipal service career in 1978 as a member of the Orillia Township Council, where he served as Councillor and then Deputy Reeve until 1994. When the new Township of Severn was formed in 1994, Ron was elected as the first Mayor. He served six years for the Township of Severn and then served as the Mayor of Orillia for three consecutive terms from 2000 to 2010. Ron returned as a member of Severn Council in 2010 and served the Severn community for another 12 years.

While on Council, Ron advocated for the environment, affordability, and healthcare for his community. During his tenure as Mayor of the City of Orillia, Ron was the Chair of the Mayor's University Task Force and played a significant role in establishing the Lakehead University Campus, which led to him being awarded their Civitas Award in 2010.
In 2022, Ron was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Government of Ontario for his 43 years of service, and the key to the Township of Severn, presented by Mayor Burkett and Council.
“Ron was known for his dedication to public service, and for his commitment to respect and represent the people of Severn in a professional and inclusive manner," said Burkett. "He described himself as a ’proud resident’ who called Severn and area home for over five decades. On behalf of Council, staff, and the people of the Township of Severn, I extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to Ron's wife Karen, and his family. He will be missed."
A book of condolences is available at our Administration Office (1024 Hurlwood Lane) for people to share their memories and thoughts with Ron's family.
In recognition and respect, the flags at Severn's Administration Office have been lowered until November 19.
