Beginner Watercolour course

Are you ready to explore the vibrant world of watercolour? Whether you're a complete beginner or have some experience and want to refine your skills, this 6-week watercolour painting class is the perfect opportunity to unleash your creativity and learn essential techniques. 

Throughout the six weeks, you’ll dive into: 

  • Watercolour essentials: Understanding materials and how to use them effectively 

  • Colour mixing and value: Create dynamic and harmonious palettes 

  • Brush techniques and textures: Experiment with strokes to add depth and detail 

  • Composition: Learn to plan and balance your artwork 

  • and more

This class is instructed by local artist Melissa Van Dam. Melissa has been teaching and creating with graphite, watercolourand acrylics in the Orillia area for over 15 years. She also recently completed 100 paintings in 100 days in the watercolour medium, all of which can be found on her website and social media.

 Zumba Dance Fit

Get ready to move, groove, and have a blast with Zumba Dance Fit.

This beginner-friendly class combines jazz, disco, hip-hop, and Latin-inspired rhythms to create a high-energy workout that feels more like a dance party. Whether you're a seasoned dancer or just starting out, our experienced instructor, Diana, will guide you through the steps beforehand, making it easy to follow along and enjoy the experience. You won’t even realize you’re exercising because you’ll be having so much fun. This class is perfect for all fitness levels and anyone looking to stay active while dancing to exciting beats. 

Participants should wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement and bring indoor running shoes and a reusable water bottle.

Yoga for Beginners

Description

This class will start with the basics. Whether you are seasoned practitioner looking to build a stronger foundation or just getting started this class is for you. We will gradually work through classic yoga postures, focusing on alignment and individual modifications, progressing into yoga flow sequences.

Each practitioner will learn to adapt their practice to their own needs so they can confidently move through a yoga class. This class is suitable for all levels. 

Participants should wear comfortable, flexible clothing suitable for movement and bring a reusable water bottle.

While yoga mats are provided on-site, please bring your own if you have one.

Beyond Beginner Yoga

Description

This class is for people with some yoga experience who want to move into sequencing and a wider variety of postures. The class will focus heavily on modifications and adaptations so that practitioners can meet their individual needs within a class setting. We borrow heavily from other movement modalities to build strength and flexibility as well as developing balance and increasing range of motion. Props are encouraged and incorporated throughout the class.

Participants should wear comfortable, flexible clothing suitable for movement and bring a reusable water bottle.

While yoga mats are provided on-site, please bring your own if you have one.

Drop-in programs

Caregiver (and Baby) Beginner JumpFit

In this inclusive one-hour class, participants (and their little ones) will start with a warm-up to prepare their bodies for low-impact jump rope exercises. Participants will learn the basics of jump rope at their own pace and progress to fun tricks, followed by a cool-down with stretches and positive intentions for the day. Caregivers can bring their newborns or toddlers to engage and socialize. 

Participants should wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement and bring indoor running shoes and a reusable water bottle.

Jump ropes are provided. 

Where: Washago Community Centre (4361 Hamilton Street) 

When: January 15 to March 5, 2025 (7 sessions, no class on January 22)

Day and time: Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. 

Fees: $15 per drop-in session 

JumpFit 30-Minute HIIT 

This high-intensity class combines cardio and jump rope skills to deliver a powerful workout. Improve endurance, agility, and strength while learning dynamic jump rope techniques in this quick and effective session. 

Participants should wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement and bring indoor running shoes and a reusable water bottle.

Jump ropes are provided.

Shuffleboard

This is a fun, non-instructional drop-in program indoors at the Coldwater Community Centre upstairs hall (11 Michael Anne Drive). Registration is not required. Equipment is provided.

When: October 29 to April 29, 2025

Day: Tuesday

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Fees: 

  • 1 to 2 hours is $1.50
  • full day is $3.00

About your instructors

Yoga: Katie Grube

Katie began doing yoga over 25 years ago as a core part of movement practice in theatre school, which also included Pilates, Calisthenics, Feldenkrais modern dance conditioning and Alexander Technique. Katie has since developed her own personal practice that led to becoming a certified Registered Yoga Teacher with Reflections Yoga Studio in New York City. Katie has instructed yoga full-time at studios and clinics throughout Orillia and Barrie, and maintained a handful of private students while working with off-ice hockey training at Next Level Sports Performance. After co-owning a local studio in Orillia Katie pursued a Masters Degree in Movement: Teaching and Directing at Central School of Speech and Drama in London, England. Katie's style of yoga became less about specific poses and sequences and more about holistic movement and adaptability to facilitate the success of each individual body. Her classes encourage fun, discovery and experimentation. 

JumpFit: Kelsi Rae

Get ready to jump, skip, and hop into fun! Certified Fitness Instructor and Jump Rope Coach Kelsi Rae combines fitness and fun in a high-energy environment where you'll improve coordination, agility, and cardiovascular fitness.

Kelsi Rae is passionate about keeping people active and engaged, ensuring each session is packed with exciting challenges and encouragement. Kelsi Rae's classes emphasize the importance of a healthy lifestyle and foster a love for physical activity.

Zumba: Diana Knapp

Diana is a Certified Personal Trainer, Pilates Instructor and Dance teacher. She loves nature and staying active and is committed to helping you have fun while exercising. 

With Diana's Zumba Dance Fit class you won't even notice you're exercising, because you'll be having so much fun. Diana's class is beginner friendly and includes Jazz, disco, hip-hop, and Latin vibes. Steps will be taught beforehand to make the experience more enjoyable and accessible for everyone.
